Nearly 70 high school students from throughout Arizona participated
in our 11th annual high school workshop held Feb. 29. This
year’s workshop was a sophisticated affair with students
getting a taste of filing stories for the web, print, radio
and TV. The event was held in central Phoenix at Arizona
State University’s Downtown Campus. To simply thank Anita
Luera, ALMA Treasurer and director of high school programs
for the Cronkite School, hardly seems enough. She did a
remarkable job of making this event our best yet. I would
also like to thank Planning Committee Chair Lorenzo Sierra
for his invaluable contributions to the workshop.
Over the years, this daylong workshop has evolved into
our signature event as more than 500 high school students
have participated since the first one in 1997. And this
one, like year’s past, could not have been a success without
the volunteer efforts of many of you, local media professionals
who led classes and helped out in many other ways. The sophistication
of the sessions reflected today’s media industry. It takes
your knowledge and experience to convey these realities
to the students.
And finally, I’d like to acknowledge the contributions
of our partner for this event, ASU’s Walter Cronkite School
of Journalism, which provided equipment, manpower and all
manner of support. Dean Chris Callahan’s welcoming remarks
got the day started on the right foot. We look forward to
continuing to work with the Cronkite School and are gratified
to know we have friends there.
It’s an exciting time for ALMA. In addition to this exciting
event, we have taken huge strides reaching some goals we
set in 2006.
Among them:
-
• We have now raised
$10,000 for our scholarship fund. This puts us one-third
of the way to our goal of $30,000. But rather than wait
until we reach our goal before providing scholarships,
we have decided to give three $500 scholarships for the
2008 fall semester. The scholarships will go to high school
students and continuing college-level students pursuing
journalism degrees at Arizona institutions.
• We now have a new logo and web site design thanks to
web site designer Felipe Ruiz. We hope it becomes ALMA’s
window to the world and showcases our growth and accomplishments.
We also want it to be a resource to our members and prospective
members. It can be found at www.ALMAweb.org
• The board is also considering a new set of bylaws that
could move us closer to being a traditional member organization
with dues-paying members. It would also streamline ALMA’s
structure. I’ll keep you posted.
And finally, I want to publicly welcome our newest board
member, Mayra Nieves, vice president of New Radio Venture,
which broadcasts here as “La Buena Onda,” KNUV-1190 AM.
In only several months, she has already been a valuable
contributor to our board and organization. !Bienvenidos
Mayra!
